The idea for Recovery Iowa came from a small group of recovery professionals who wanted to change the way people perceive addiction and recovery. Recovery Iowa seeks to create a network of people from the recovery community and all others concerned about the recovery process, to assist in educating policy makers, service providers, legislators and the public. "We can... improve the lives of millions of Americans, their families, and communities if we treat addiction to alcohol and other drugs as the public health crisis that it is. To overcome this crisis, we must accord dignity to people with addiction." 1
Funding for Recovery Iowa comes from The Iowa Substance Abuse Information Center (ISAIC). ISAIC was established with funding from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), and the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI). ISAIC is Iowa's Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource (RADAR) Center. In that capacity, ISAIC provides individuals and organizations in Iowa with access to a comprehensive collection of print and other media resources on substance abuse, problem gambling, and related topics.
You can help to eliminate the stigma of addiction by spreading the word that recovery is important, possible for anyone, and is happening every day in Iowa. As long as addiction is kept hidden due to shame and fear of stigma, it will be difficult to ensure treatment for those who need it.
