Take Action and Advocate for Recovery
We can offer hope to those in recovery, and their loved ones, if we
treat the misuse of alcohol, drugs, and gambling as the public health
issue that it is, and accord dignity to those with dependence disorders. You can
help.
Be an advocate for recovery and help make a difference!
- "Be counted". Sign Up and Stand Up for Recovery. Fill out the form
on this site
and you will be added to the numbers of Iowans who are speaking
up against the stigma attached to those in recovery from
drug, alcohol, and gambling disorders.
- Email your story to RecoveryIowa.org and we
will share it during Recovery Month to let others know they are not
alone. You may use your name or send your story anonymously.
- Speak publicly or privately with your city council, your state
government, your legislators and other officials. Let them know
first hand that treatment works.
- Help to organize recovery support services in your local community.
Contact us to find your local treatment/recovery services.
- Share with your family and friends that drug, alcohol, and
gambling dependence are disorders that it
can be treated. Recovery is possible, important, and a new beginning.
(See The Recovery Bill of Rights.)
- Help your friends and loved ones who are dependent on drugs, alcohol,
or gambling, by telling them that
there are many treatment options available. Point them to this site to
find an Iowa recovery facility or a
mutual support group meeting near their
home.
- Share with those in a decision-making capacity that you support
increased spending for substance and gambling disorder treatment. Every dollar spent on
treatment saves dollars in reduced criminal justice, public health, and
child welfare costs.
